What is the thermal lens effect?
When the optical lens is continuously irradiated by the laser beam for a long time, it will produce thermal deformation due to the increase of temperature, which will change the refractive index of the transmissive optical element and the reflection direction of the reflective optical element, resulting in the shift of focus and the instability of laser processing.
In stainless steel fiber laser marking machine and other laser applications, the thermal lens effect will lead to the shortening of focal length and focal depth, the shift of focal position and the change of focal spot, which will directly affect the marking effect, especially in the applications of metal deep engraving, precision welding, stainless steel coloring and scribing.
The higher the processing power, the faster the thermal expansion of the field mirror and the more obvious the heat penetration effect. Thus, the effect of marking, cutting and continuous welding will be affected, such as the increase of slag at the bottom and continuous cutting.
The thermal lens is more obvious due to poor quality, dirt and damage of optical elements. In practical laser applications, in addition to the inspection and cleaning of optical devices and parts before use, field mirrors of different materials and quality can effectively reduce the thermal lens effect.
In the process of practical laser application, in addition to replacing the field mirror made of better quartz material, the dirt and damage of each optical element (such as output head lens, collimator, beam combining lens, etc.) should also be checked in different use environments, and timely cleaned and replaced.
